1. Sign up
for and attend a class OF YOUR CHOICE during the months of March
or September. The regular class schedules for March and
September are posted on the Bellevue Botanical Garden website
under Garden d’ Lights. (The September schedule is posted in
August). When you attend your class you will be taught the basic
techniques of light construction and actually create a light
formation of some kind. What you create in the class goes into
our display. You get to keep the instruction sheet you received,
and can purchase supplies for making your own personal items, if
you wish. Class fee: $15.00 for non-Society participants, $5.00
for Society Members.

2. Sign up
for and attend a New Volunteer Class held once a month from
April thru August. The schedule for the New Volunteer Classes
will also be posted on the Bellevue Botanical Garden website. We
are offering these interim classes for those who did not have
the opportunity to register for regular class sessions, or heard
about the program mid-year and are anxious to join our program
as a volunteer.
When you
attend this class, you will NOT have a choice of what you will
be making, but you will learn the basic techniques of light
construction. What you create will also go into our display, and
you will be able to keep your instruction sheet and purchase
supplies for making your own personal items, if you wish. There
is no charge for the New Volunteer Classes.
After
attending either a regular class, or a new volunteer class you
are welcome and encouraged to come to our regular work parties,
which are usually scheduled at least once a week from April thru
August. At work parties you will learn more skills and
techniques in flower building. Each time you attend a work
party, you may take a copy of instructions for a light creation
with no charge.
Work
parties are held on an “open house” format: come when you can
and leave when you have to. We do not provide meals for those
staying over lunch or dinner hours, but usually some “goodies”
are provided.
Work party
schedules are e-mailed to those who have given us their e-mail
address when they attended classes. This is a private e-mail
list which is used only for Garden d’ Lights information
e-mails. When you have volunteered a total of 10 hours or more
during work party times (classes do not count) you are invited
to some to our special light viewing party, which is
traditionally held the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving. It
is a potluck social, and we have the park and the wonderful
display we have created all to ourselves for the evening.
I WANT TO
VOLUNTEER, BUT DON’T WANT TO MAKE LIGHTS? CAN I BE OF HELP?
YES! If you
want to volunteer, but are not interested in learning how to
make the lights, we welcome volunteers during Light Installation
(the month of November), during the actual Light Show
(performing a variety of tasks), and during the Take Down
process (usually the two weeks following the last night of the
light show). Please remember to dress for the weather. We are
working outside in the WINTER. Good rain gear, waterproof shoes,
gloves, etc. will make your time outdoors in the elements much
easier to handle. We do not work during high wind storms and
driving rain, but knowing that we live in the Northwest, there
are days when it is raining and cold out there, and proper
apparel is a must. Volunteers helping during install, show time,
and take down do not have to attend a class to learn how to make
flowers.
After you
have put in ten (10) hours with Garden d’Lights,
Lisa Scott,
Volunteer Program Coordinator for the Garden, will contact you.
She will provide you with a Volunteer Application, a WA State
Patrol Background Check authorization form, and invite you to a
volunteer orientation. |
