feet tall (usually shorter in the garden) with stout unbranched to
short branched stems.
Leaves:
Pinnately divided into about 19 leaflets that have spiny teeth on the
edges similar to holly. Each leaf may be up to 24 inches long. Rich
green and slightly glossy above, yellowish green beneath.
Flower: Flower
is slightly fragrant, small with three-merous parts. Petals, sepals
and stamens usually 6. Stamens have a small flap on the top from which
pollen emerges. Flowers are clumped into showy lemon yellow clusters.
Racemes are terminal and very numerous (up to 20 per cluster). They
are 10 14 inches long.
Fruit: Profuse,
blue to black with a lovely bloom, about 1/3 inch in diameter.
Disease/pests: Leaf
rusts, white fly, experiences some damage to leaves by a looper
caterpillar. .

December to January
Conditions:
Easily grown and good looking all year. Needs shade at least in the
afternoon to keep its deep green color, regular water. Prune stems at
varying heights to induce branching
