Acer japonicum ‘Aconitifolium

Other cultivars/species:  The species A. japonicum is a fine tree as well, reaching a height of 20 to 30 feet.  Other few cultivars of note include Acer j. ‘Aureum’, Acer .j. ‘O-taki’ and Acer .j. ‘Vitrifolium’.

Extra notes and interesting information:
Striking crimson autumn color.  Often regarded as the most beautiful fall color shrubs in the Northwest
.
Occasional deep watering and feeding will help keep roots from rising to the surface.
‘Aconitifolium’ stays small, so it can be used as a shrub or a small tree.

Leaves: 
2-5 inch long leaves with 9 to 11 toothed lobes.  Lobes are deeply cut, almost to the leaf stalk
Flower: 
Purple.  The paired winged seeds that are produced are initially “fuzzy”, and the wings form an almost horizontal angle.
Bloom period: Early April before the leaves appear.
Disease/pests: 
 No significant problems.
