Cryptomeria japonica ‘Black Dragon’    

Other Cultivars/species: C,japonica ‘Black Dragon” is sometimes classified with the Taxodiacea family, but recent research has combined the two families into the Cupressaceae
family.

Extra notes and interesting information:

The young tree may grow fast to 4-6 feet, then fill in slowly until a dense shrub is formed.

Cultivars are best grown from cuttings to become true.

Common Name: Japanese Cedar

Plant type: Evergreen Tree

Height/Spread:
Approx. 9’ high x 8’ wide in 20 years.
Leaves: Dense, almost black, needle-like leaves to 1/2-inch.
Bark/Stem: Straight trunk, fibrous red-brown bark.

Bloom Characteristics: Pollen bearing male cones located on branch tip release pollen in spring.  Roundish brown female cones farther down on branches ripen in approx. 10 months.
Diseases/Pests:
Young plants can suffer

branch dieback.

Growing Conditions:  Grow in rich, well drained, acidic soil, in full sun to partial shade. Protect from strong winds. Drought tolerant.

Natural range: Japan and China

Hardiness: USDA zones 6 to 9.
Location:
Alpine Rock Garden, Bed 10.
